Donald Trump’s corruption seems to know no bounds.
His latest move even has Congressional Republicans balking at the idea: he has set up a 1.8 billion dollar slush fund to pay his political cronies and allies who claim that the U.S. Department of Justice has treated them unfairly—you know, prosecuted and convicted them of crimes.
This slush fund comes with a lot of loopholes barring the public from actually knowing what is going on.
A committee of 5 individuals will be chosen—by Trump himself, who else?—to dole out this money. Only they will know what the choices have been, who gets what money, and why.
Not only that, but those 5 can decide to use that money however they want to repay themselves for “services rendered”.
And all the money will need to be disbursed by the end of Trump’s term, or it will revert to the federal government. Who wants to bet that it will all be gone?
All of this comes after two lawsuits Trump and his sons filed against HIS OWN Justice Department and Internal Revenue Service—his own government departments—for reparations for actions he felt harmed him. What he called “weaponizing” the government against him as an individual.
Now, plenty of people have seen the government and the Justice system weaponized against them, from the FBI COINTELPRO attacks in the 1960s and 70s, to the most recent ICE shootings and arrests just this year. These are all real victims. But what are the chances they will be able to bring a claim against this government and get some of that money?
No, this slush fund was created for one group and one group only: Trump, and all of his friends.
Trump and his family will be immune from all of the IRS suits brought against him. And that’s separate from all the money that could be doled out.
Starting, apparently, with all of the January 6, 2021 defendants who were convicted of crimes, who were then pardoned by Trump on his first day in office. Some of them are already planning on making claims for millions of dollars—because they have a friend in the White House.
What’s striking about all of this, though, is not that it is happening. It is that the ruling class doesn’t seem to care.
Every single thing Trump has done to chip away at so-called democratic norms has been met with a collective shrug by the capitalist class. This “democracy” has always been a democracy for the ruling elite first and foremost—a bourgeois democracy, a democracy for the capitalist class.
Everyone else in this society, whether working people, black people, women, anyone without property, have had to fight and scratch and claw for some semblance of a voice in this system. And when the fights stopped, the gains all started to be taken away.
The ruling class of billionaires is okay with a shrunken democracy. And now they’re saying they’re okay if we are left with a ruler who thinks of himself as a king to enrich himself at our expense.
It doesn’t affect their bottom line, or even their access to the halls of power—THEIR “democracy”.
And they won’t be paying into Trump’s slush fund. We will, the actual taxpayers.
If nothing else, Trump’s brazen corruption shows just how rotten this entire system has become, and how little the rulers of this society truly care about democracy or justice.
The only way that the rest of us have gained anything in this society has been by fighting for it tooth and nail. And once we stop fighting, it all starts to be taken away.
It’s time to end the cycle. It’s time to wipe this rotten system away. It’s time for working people to build a new society that benefits all of us.
